Signing Up for the Class[]
If you want to take a cycle class at the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center, it is recommended that you reserve a spot online at https://ucfrwc.org/Program/GetProgramDetails?courseId=41a11bd2-d13e-4f0b-b04d-36800717a949&semesterId=c25c12cf-cd1d-467e-ad46-cef66470b1bb. Classes open for registration 24 hours prior to the class time. There are morning, afternoon, and evening classes on weekdays, but on weekends, there are only one or two classes. You will need your UCF login and password to register.
Entering the Recreation and Wellness Center[]
Be sure to bring your student ID and a water bottle and arrive 10-15 minutes early. Walk up the front steps of the RWC to the second floor and approach the front desk that is located towards the back of the room, across from the Smoothie King. A gym staff member can swipe your ID and let you through the open pathway closest to the desk, or you can set up an account so that your handprint will be recognized on one of the devices located in a row perpendicular to the desk, and you will be allowed access through the turnstile.
Once you are past the turnstiles, go down the stairs that are on your right. The Spin Studio is the first room you will see, across from the trophy case. Most of the time, there will be two lines outside the door. The line along the wall closest to the stairs is the line for those who signed up online. In that line, a fitness attendant will ask for your name and check you off on their clipboard. If you did not sign up online, get into the line on the other side of the door. If there are enough open bikes, you will be allowed in.
Getting Set Up on Your Bike in the Spin Studio[]
Once inside, place any of your personal items, besides your water bottle if you have one, in the cubbies on the wall to the right of the door. Choose any bike and place your water bottle in the holder on the handlebars. You can adjust the height of the seat and handlebars by lifting the levers on them to unlock them and pushing the seat or handlebars down. If you are not sure which height is best for you, ask the instructor to help you. After everything is adjusted to suit you, push the levers down to lock the seat and handlebars in place.
Once on the bike, tighten the straps on the pedal cages by pulling on them. Depending on what the instructor says, you
can either set the screen on the handlebars to “Quick Start” by simply pressing “Quick Start” or “Power Training”, which will lead you to a series of questions about your weight and fitness level. Answer “no” to the questions about pairing the app and HR Sensor training, and say “yes” to color mode. Once that is set up, the bike’s light and the screen will change color based on your speed and the bike’s resistance. The resistance knob is the red button on the middle of the bike that says “STOP.” You can turn it right to make your ride harder or left to make it easier, or you can push it down to stop the pedals from moving.
During the Class[]
Throughout the class, you can either follow along with the instructor and do exactly as they tell you, or you can go at your own pace and only do what you are comfortable with doing.
When instructor says things like “How are you doing/feeling?” Or “Are you ready to cycle?” it is expected that you
respond with a “Woo!” rather than an actual answer to the question.
After the Class[]
After the class has ended, raise the seat and handlebars to the highest position by unlocking them again and pulling them up. Get a wipe from the bucket to the right of the door, next to the cubbies, and wipe down your bike. Dispose of the wipe in the bucket below the bucket of wipes.
